In the tapestry of realms, the gods are ever-present, weaving their narratives through the mortal coil, impacting the daily lives and destinies of all beings in various degrees. “Harlorim Kunur,” a saying known to the dwarves, speaks of the ceaseless activities of the divine forces, even in what seems to be a period of celestial stillness.
The vast array of gods and goddesses stand as patrons of various aspects of existence: good and evil, law and chaos, life and death, knowledge and nature.. While the gods most
strongly make their presence felt through their clerics, they also have lay followers who more or less attempt to live up to their deities’ standards. The typical person has a deity whom he considers
to be his patron. Still, it is only prudent to be respectful toward and even pray to other deities when the time is right.
From grand temples heralding the presence of benevolent gods to hidden shrines that cater to those who worship the embodiments of slaughter and chaos, the religious landscape is as diverse as the beings that inhabit the world. While most opt to choose a patron deity, a path influenced by their race, class, and personal alignment, others tread a solitary path, acknowledging the gods’ power but refusing to bind themselves to any deity, seeking instead a path of neutrality or personal enlightenment.
Selection of a Deity
While not mandatory, having a patron deity can shape a character’s journey significantly, offering a philosophical framework and divine guidance to navigate the intricacies of a world influenced by divine dynamics. You character may or may not have a patron deity. If you want her to have one, consider first the deities most appropriate to the character’s race, class, and alignment (see Table 6–2: Deities by Race
and Table 6–3: Deities by Class). If a cleric selects a deity, which one he selects influences his capabilities. Players with cleric characters should refer to Deity, Domains, and Domain Spells, page 32, before
picking a deity, though the information below describing the various gods and goddesses can help them make a decision.
